A home can take months or years to bring to life, and the details you choose along the way will shape how someone experiences it for decades. A window frames the morning light. A door opens to a view the homeowner fell in love with. The feel of a handle, the finish against the surrounding materials and the way a window opens all become part of daily life long after the project is complete.
As a builder, you’re responsible for making those details work together. When window and door decisions affect structural plans, budgets and schedules, you need more than a product catalog. You need a partner who understands your vision, helps you navigate technical details and works alongside you when the unexpected happens.
That’s why Russell Taylor, owner and builder at Rooster Builders Inc., values his relationship with Designer Window Supply. Through years of collaboration, he has experienced how early design involvement, hands-on product selection, and careful communication can help him protect his clients’ priorities and make decisions with confidence.
Choose a Partner Who Invests in Your Success
Russell grew up spending summers and weekends on job sites with his father and brother before pursuing building full time. As he established Rooster Builders and began taking on larger projects, he found more opportunities to work with DWS and its premium window and door offerings.
What helped build that relationship was the attention DWS gave his projects, even when they were small. Russell remembers Dan Cabelli, Design Consultant at Designer Window Supply, helping with measurements on an early job. As Russell recalls, “It was really nice of him because that was definitely a smaller project, but he took the time and careful attention to detail to make sure that we were taken care of there.”
That experience helped establish trust before larger projects came along. For you as a builder, having a partner who takes your projects seriously from the first measurement onward can make a difference when the stakes get higher.
Bring Your Window Partner Into the Design Process Early
Window and door configurations can affect wall thickness, structural requirements, and architectural plans. If those details surface after plans are submitted, even a small adjustment can lead to revisions and delays.
Russell recommends involving DWS before plans are submitted. As he explains, “The design phase before we even submit our plans is really ultimately the best thing because oftentimes we end up making, even if they are minor changes, it can affect structural, architectural, and many other things.”
One project illustrates why that collaboration matters. The original design called for pocket doors, but structural limitations related to wall thickness created challenges. The team also recognized that the design wasn’t fully delivering the homeowner’s main priority: her west-facing whitewater view.
Cabelli explained how the team reconsidered the design: “There was a section of wall that took up her west-facing whitewater view. It was maybe four to six feet, and by adjusting where we put the door and making it non-pocketing, she’s getting much more of that view.”
The change required structural revisions and additional plan submissions, delaying the project by roughly a month to a month and a half. Still, the revised design gave the homeowner more of the view she wanted. For you as a builder, the takeaway is clear: involving your window partner before plans are submitted gives you more opportunity to resolve design and structural conflicts before they affect the schedule.
Help Homeowners Experience the Difference
A photograph and a price sheet can’t tell a homeowner how smoothly a window opens, how a handle feels, or how a finish looks in natural light. Those differences become clearer when clients can experience products in person.
Russell values the DWS showroom because it gives him confidence bringing clients to a team of professionals. He explains, “I’m personally someone who likes to see things in person. I like to touch them, feel them, make sure that it is exactly what I want out of the product. Because there’s so much online that just doesn’t really showcase and present the product in a way that they’re able to.”
That hands-on experience also helped one of Russell’s clients feel comfortable with her investment. Initially concerned about being pushed toward products outside her budget, she visited the showroom and compared different options with the DWS team. After seeing the differences, she felt comfortable choosing a slightly more expensive package that better suited her priorities.
Russell believes that experience changed the outcome. Without seeing the products in person, he says, “she probably would have just gone with the cheaper option, and I don’t think she would have been as satisfied as she is with the direction that she decided to go in.”
For you as a builder, the showroom gives clients a chance to move beyond comparing prices and understand what they’re choosing. Windows and doors can remain part of a home for 30 years or longer, influencing comfort, energy efficiency, and daily life. Helping homeowners experience their options firsthand gives them a clearer basis for making that long-term decision.
Build With a Partner Who Understands Your Priorities
Strong partnerships require more than product knowledge. They depend on integrity, communication, and a willingness to work through challenges together. Dan values Russell’s integrity and collaborative approach, while Russell appreciates Dan’s resourcefulness and willingness to connect him with additional expertise when needed.
Dan sees the relationship as a partnership that extends beyond individual projects. He values opportunities to help Russell grow his business by sharing resources, making connections, and simplifying complex window and door decisions. As Dan explains, “I just want to see people like that succeed. So however I can, giving Russell resources, just making maybe doors and windows a little bit more set in stone.” For you as a builder, that kind of partnership means having a knowledgeable resource who understands your priorities and is invested in helping you deliver the right results for your clients.
